In its seventh edition, entitled «Design, Health and Well-being,» Base, Design and Innovation Journal addresses the challenges and opportunities the design field encounters in improving the quality of life.
The journal’s launch event was held at the end of March, with the presence of the President of Universidad del Desarrollo, Federico Valdés; the dean of the Design School, Alejandra Amenábar; the director of UDD Design Research, Paulina Contreras; as well as school directors and special guests from the fields of design and health.
To deepen the content of this edition, a panel discussion moderated by the editor of Base Journal, Úrsula Bravo, was organised. The panel included prominent figures such as Paula Daza, former Undersecretary of Public Health and current Executive Director of the Centre for Public Policy and Innovation in Health at Universidad del Desarrollo (CIPS-UDD); Jaime Saez, architect and author of the book «Healthy Design»; and Mariana Amatullo, Vice Chancellor and Dean of Continuing Education at Parsons School of Design, The New School.
«The journal presents numerous examples of how design stands out as a discipline focused on solving complex problems through empathy and observation of the needs and realities of users and the environments we inhabit, exploring innovative initiatives and developing cutting-edge research projects,» said Dean Alejandra Amenábar.
Úrsula Bravo explained: «The purpose of Base, Diseño e Innovación Journal is to foster dialogues between designers and professionals from other disciplines, bringing together relevant actors from academia, industry, the state and civil organisations. We highlight inspiring experiences where design has played a crucial role, identify new areas of development and foster collaborations that broaden design horizons».
Next edition
Base, Diseño e Innovación Journal has obtained a National Fund for Cultural Development and the Arts, Fondart, for its next issue to support the work carried out since 2014. Under the title «Biodesign: Innovation based on nature», this issue will explore how bio-inspired innovations can reduce the negative impact of production and consumption systems on the environment.
The award of this Fondart also includes a series of talks aimed at academics, researchers, design students and representatives of public and private organisations linked to innovation ecosystems. These talks aim to promote biodesign and foster collaboration between its managers.
Alejandra Amenábar noted that this fund reinforces UDD Design’s commitment to disseminating the discipline beyond academia. «Receiving this funding strengthens our outreach work and encourages us to continue contributing to sustainable development through design,» she said.
Úrsula Bravo added that «the journal is an excellent platform for dissemination, with an international scope and a clear purpose: to communicate the role of design as a catalyst for innovation processes, promote conversations between different spheres and bring together relevant actors from academia, industry, the state and civil organisations».
